Description of Service

The General Medical Unit (GMU):

  • Cares for patients with a variety of medical problems in both the General Medical ward and in the new state-of-the-art 28 bed Acute Medical Unit.

  • Is staffed by:

    • Consultant Physicians in General Medicine, many of whom also have an additional subspecialty qualification such as Cardiology, Endocrinology, Renal Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Gastroenterology, Rheumatology, Clinical Pharmacology etc. 

    • These consultants supervise Advanced and Basic Physician Trainees and more junior doctors to provide comprehensive medical care.  This may involve consultation with other disciplines as required.

    • Allied Health personnel including Social Workers, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, Nutritionists and Care Co-ordinators to meet the many and varied needs of our patients.

  • Has a close working relationship with Caulfield Hospital and Sandringham Hospital. Some patients will be transferred to these hospitals for their on-going care.

  • Is an important provider of supervised education and training for a number of disciplines including trainee specialists and junior doctors. Patients may be invited to assist in teaching sessions.

  • Provides a comprehensive ambulatory (Outpatient) service for patients in the Disease Management Unit (DMU). as well as individual clinics for Consultants.  This service is well supported by Care Co-ordinators and the Allied Health disciplines and can be contacted on 9076 2375

  • Provides staff to supervise peri-operative management of patients and also assists in the management of medical problems in patients admitted following trauma.
