Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine

Description of Service

The Alfred Department of Anaesthesia and pain Management provides a unique service to the patients and specialist units of the hospital by providing 24-hour in-house Consultant level cover. For a complete list of all members of the department and their contact details please click here.

The Department provides day, night and weekend cover to the anaesthetic and surgical needs of the Alfred, Caulfield and Sandringham Hospitals.

The Department provides a 24-hour service to patients of the State Trauma Service, the State Burns Service and cardiothoracic transplantation patients.

The Department operates the Acute Pain Service who oversees the management of regional analgesia infusions and patient-controlled-analgesia. This consultant-based service is available by referral to all other specialist units within the hospital for advice or management of patients with pain that is difficult to control.

Members of the Department attend all arrest calls and MET team calls within the Hospital. Requests for assistance with resuscitation of Surgical and Medical patients are accommodated when specific expertise is unavailable from within the managing unit.

The Preoperative service provides a Consultant or Senior Registrar from the Anaesthetic Department available to manage the workup of surgical patients prior to their operation. This supports a day of surgery admission rate of greater than 90% within the hospital. Many of these patients are complex vascular and cardiac cases.
